Positioned at 2°6'19" East longitude and 13°31'17" North latitude, Niamey was most probably founded in the 18th century, but at that point of time, the country was of little or at all no significance. It was only during French colonialism on the land in the 1890s that Niamey gained importance as a French colonial post.
This was the starting point of Niamey gaining significance as a city in Niger. The development reached its culmination when Niamey was declared the capital of Niger in 1926.
