Madagascar President is the head of the government. He is the head of the state as well. He is elected by the people and is supposed to serve a five year term. The candidate must of 40 years old at least. He or she has to be a resident of Madagascar in order to become the President. President in Madagascar symbolize the unity of the state.
Madagascar President and Prime Minister share the executive power. The Prime Minister is appointed by the President. The Prime Minister needs to get the support of the members of parliament. However, even after getting the support of the President might not approve him or her as a Prime Minister. In that case or if the candidate does not get the support of the majority the President himself can appoint somebody who will serve a one year term.
President of Madagascar play the role of a leader of foreign policy. He is the most powerful person of the country. But for the function of the government the Prime Minister is held responsible not the President. The President is elected by people. But if any candidate fails to win the majority of the vote, a run-off election is to be held between both the leading candidates. It has to be done within two months.
The recent Presidential election was held on 6th December 2006. Ravalomanana won the Presidential election in spite of all the controversies. He has got 51%. The political unrest effected the election greatly and opposition claimed that because of the media manipulation the election which took place was not fair enough. In spite of the controversies Ravalomanana came to power.
