Lesotho Human Rights



Lesotho human rights are given to the people of Lesotho to protect them against any kind of discrimination. The human rights of Lesotho are enjoyed by the people irrespective of their race, sex or social position.

Some of the Lesotho Human Rights are given below:
  • Human rights, Lesotho emphasizes on the integrity of a person which includes freedom from unlawful and arbitrary deprivation of life, torture and other inhuman treatment, arbitrary arrest and detention, denial of fair public trial, disappearance, arbitrary interference with privacy, family, home or correspondence

  • There is freedom of peaceful assembly and association in Lesotho

  • The Lesotho human rights guarantee freedom of speech and press

  • Human rights in Lesotho assure freedom of movement within the country, foreign travel, emigration and repatriation

  • Freedom of religion is one of the major human rights in the place

  • The citizens of Lesotho have the political rights to change their government

  • Everybody has got the right to state-provided medical care irrespective of sex

  • No discrimination against any person can be done on the basis of language, race, social status or sex

  • The Lesotho human rights also safeguard the rights of the workers. The workers enjoy the rights to form unions. They also can bargain collectively. There is a prohibition on forced labor and bonded labor. The minimum age for employment is 15 years.
Lesotho Council of NGOs works towards strengthening the human rights of Lesotho people. This is done by the Council through the following member NGOs:
  • Lesotho Clothing and Allied Workers’ Union fighting for workers’ rights
  • Lesotho Youth Federation working for youth and gender equality
  • Development for Peace Education and Community Legal Resource and Advise Centre working on rights of the detained people
  • ‘Blue Cross Thaba-Bosiu Centre’ and ‘Centre for Empowerment and Social Analysis’ working for disability rights
They collect information from the prison, factories, police, and community councils through interviews to keep a constant eye on the human rights.

The Lesotho Government has adopted some policies and programs in line with the ‘Paris Principles on the status and functioning of national institutions’ for establishment of human rights. The government has also introduced a bill that protects the human rights of the prisoners of Lesotho.
