History of Trinidad and Tobago

History of Trinidad and Tobago dates back to the year 1498 when Christopher Columbus discovered the two islands of Trinidad and Tobago. Trinidad and Tobago were taken over by the British colonizers and it received its independence from the British rule in the year 1962. Trinidad and Tobago proclaimed itself as republic in the year 1976.

People started settling down in the land of Trinidad and Tobago around the year 5000BC. The most ancient settlers of this island are said to be of South American descent and they started settling in the area south of Trinidad. Many native tribes lived in the island of Trinidad and Tobago and one of the earliest settlers was the “Banwaris”. Then the Caribbeans came, whose impact was quite profound upon this island. The “Barrancoid” tribal group who settled along the river of Orinaco was the later settlers along with the other tribes. Spanish settlement came into being early after the discovery of this island by Columbus. Slave trading was quite prevalent during the pre-independence period and during the year 1510 there was an increase in slave trading and these slaves were known as 'Caribs'.

During the 16th century missions were constituted to make Trinidad and Tobago a Spanish colony. After the onset of the French revolution many French people migrated to Trinidad and Tobago and settled down peacefully. This is the reason as to why Trinidad and Tobago till date has such a large French speaking population. Here were constant fights between the Spanish and the British colonists over these islands and finally the English were the ones to overthrow the Spanish colonizers and set up their rule in Trinidad and Tobago. The pre-independence struggle was part of the Trinidad and Tobago history, which continued for a long time and slave trade ended finally in the year 1833.

Trinidad and Tobago's history is marked with many fights and passive protests by the natives in order to set their country free from the rule of the Englishmen.
