Flag of Spain
was adopted officially on December 19, 1981. It has a modified version of Spain's coat of arms pictured on the yellow stripe. The Spanish coat of arms describes two pillars of Hercules with crown tops. The red banners in the pillars exhibit the Latin motto 'Plus Ultra' which signifies 'More Beyond' adverting to the discovery of the New World by Columbus. The two columns winging a shield display a castle and a lion wearing a crown. An ornamented red and golden crown is located on the top the shield.
Spain National Flag
was designed as per the 1945 regulation from 1977 to 1981. In the pre '77 a picture of an eagle was placed in the middle on the yellow band. On 21 st of January, 1977 a new design was approved. The previous one had an eagle with its widely opened wings. Now, the Pillars of Hercules were inserted within the wings. A tape with the motto UNA GRANDE LIBRE (ONE GREAT FREE) was hung from the neck of the eagle.
