The Scottish history is said to have begun when the Roman Empire arrived in Britain. After entering Britain, the Romans occupied England and Wales. The people on the Northern side of the territory was known as the Picts.

The Scot colonies were established in the Stuart's Town and Nova Scotia. The settlers of Scotland were sent to New Jersey's English Colony. For establishing a colony on Panama's Isthmus, the Scottish companies followed a scheme known as Darien scheme. This was devised by William Paterson and donations were collected for the scheme. The Company collected an amount of about four lakh pounds within a week, when they returned to the capital city of Edinburgh. Thousands of men were taken in small fleets to travel to the Panama. Those ships were not equipped with weapons. In the beginning of 1700, free trade was permitted and this benefited the Scots in doing business with the rising English Empire.
