Portugal history went through the ups and downs that characterized the history of Europe. When the ruling period of King Afronso Henriques came to an end, Portugal attained its independence. In 1385, the Castilians were defeated in the Aljubarotta battle. In 1580, Portugal was under the supremacy of the Spanish.
When the Spanish were defeated, the dynasty of Braganza came into force. Catherine, the Royal princess, married Prince Charles, the second, of England. The marriage strengthened the trade relations between England and Portugal.
The Castilians were defeated in the battle of Aljubarrota by the Portuguese, with the support of Nun Alvares Pereira. The Aviz dynasty was founded by King John, and he was regarded as the most successful king in the history of Portugal.
When King Henry died, the Aviz dynasty came to an end. Philip, the second, acquired the Portuguese throne and became the king of Portugal. The Spanish wars between the Dutch and the English broke the trade relations between the two nations. In 1640, the Portuguese with the help of Philip, the fourth, overthrew the Spanish power.
In 1910, the republic of Portugal was founded. During this time, Teofilo Braga was the President of Portugal. Later on Salazar became the president in 1932. His presidentship was a remarkable phase in Portugal history.Although the country had the membership in NATO, they were asked not to enter the United Nations till the year 1955.
