Sports Venues in Nicaragua


The sports venues in Nicaragua can be classified into two categories. The baseball venues and the football venues. Baseball is the most popular game of Nicaragua. The Nicaragua baseball team is one of the best and has won may tournaments at the national and international level. Football though the second popular game, has a long way to go to match world standards.

The Dennis Martinez National Stadium, Managua is one of the main sports venues in Nicaragua. It is located in Managua, the capital city of Nicaragua. This gigantic stadium has a capacity holding 30,100 people. There is a well equipped gym inside the stadium for the convenience of the players and athletes. This stadium is mainly a baseball venue but then it also hosts football, big concerts and also religious events. There is a well maintained 'hall of fame' near the entrance of the stadium decorated with medals, cups, photos of the well known Nicaraguan players. Originally it was named El Estadio Nacional or The National Stadium. The disastrous seismic tremors of 1972 razed it to ground. In the recent past it has been renamed the Dennis Martinez National Stadium to honor the legendary baseball player Dennis Martinez, who was the first baseball player to play in Major League Baseball. He won more games than any other Latin American Pitcher. This stadium hosts around five baseball matches every week. The oval shape of the stadium resembles the Polo ground. A single deck provides 10 to 30 rows of seating arrangement inside the stadium. There is a vast area beyond the outfield fence providing the standing room.

Estadio Independencia, is a multi use stadium in Esteli, Nicaragua. The stadium with a capacity of 4,500 people currently is the home stadium to Real Esteli.

Estadio Cacique Diriangen, Diriamba is another stadium in Nicaragua under the multi-use category. The stadium has a capacity of 7,500 people and is a home stadium to FC Diriangen. Football matches are mostly held in this stadium.

Estadio Olimpica de San Macros is another multi use stadium in San Marcos, Nicaragua. As a home stadium to FC San Macros it has a capacity of 3,000 people, currently used for football matches.

Most of the stadiums in Nicaragua are of international standard and are immaculately maintained. The Dennis Martinez National Stadium ranks high among the well known world stadiums.
