History of Mauritania



History of Mauritania provides a lot of information about the gradual development of the country of Mauritania. The History of Mauritania throws light on the fact that it was first visited by the Berbers and the blacks. The country of Mauritania is actually considered as a prime center for the Berber Almoravid movement in the 11th century.

From the history of Mauritania it can be said that it was first inhabited by the Portuguese in the 15th century and by the French in the 19th century. In the year 1920 the country of Mauritania got converted in to one of the colonies, which comprised of the French West Africa. In the year 1946 it was given the name of French Overseas territory.

The country of Mauritania got her independence in the year 1960 only after the abolishment of the French West Africa. Initially, the arch rival of Mauritania, Morocco refused to recognize the independent status of Mauritania. But in the year 1969 it accepted the existence of a free and independent Mauritania.

The first president of independent Mauritania is Ould Daddah who ruled for 18 years till 1978. The political scenario of this country experiences frequent disturbances due to conflict arising among various ethnic groups. Thus the Mauritania history proves to be useful to the historians to gather lot of unknown facts about this country of Africa.
