The country of Mauritania got her independence in the year 1960 only after the abolishment of the French West Africa. Initially, the arch rival of Mauritania, Morocco refused to recognize the independent status of Mauritania. But in the year 1969 it accepted the existence of a free and independent Mauritania.
The first president of independent Mauritania is Ould Daddah who ruled for 18 years till 1978. The political scenario of this country experiences frequent disturbances due to conflict arising among various ethnic groups.
