The Finland Gulf is spread over an extensive area of 4,21,000 square kilometers. The length of the gulf extends to 460 kilometers and the width ranges from 15-120 kilometers. The Gulf of Finland is an important passage for the shipping and trade industry of both Russia and Estonia. The main source of water in the gulf is the Narva River, and the two lakes, namely Lake Lagoda and Lake Saimaa.
Finland is extremely chilly during the winter months and temperature drops down well below freezing point. As a result, the Gulf of Finland also remains frozen during the winter months, which range from December to March. The gulf also has some small islands that are an integral part of Finland. Helsinki, St. Petersburg and Tallinn are some of the important ports in the Gulf of Finland.
