Himeji is most popular as the city which houses the beautiful and traditionally rich UNESCO certified sight of the Himeji castle . The city alone, however, is not insignificant as it is one of Japan's most important cities, which has 6 international sister cities, 2 Japanese sister cities and also an international sister castle.
The 2005 census estimated the population of the city to be at 488,956 with the density of persons per square kilometer being 1771.84 spread across a total area of 275.96 square kilometers. These figures clearly indicate that the city has a large concentration of population which places it among the top cities that has the highest population in Japan. Despite, a strong economic base, Himeji is popular internationally as the castle city or more specifically the castle town. This popularity is owing largely to the famous Himeji castle that is located here.
The Himeji castle has increased Himeji's stature internationally and has today become synonymous with the place. The castle dates back to medieval times and is one of Japan's oldest cultural heritage. Highly typical of a Japanese castle, the Himeji castle too portrays the usual architectural excellences modeled to be a defense structure. The castle gained world heritage status from UNESCO in the December of 1993. Himeji has been the headquarters of 4 Shinkin banks and is alos the financial center of the Hyogo region.
