As the soil of Venezuela is not as rich as the soil in its neighboring countries, Venezuela agriculture was responsible for about 5% of GDP in 2001. As a matter of fact, it has been estimated that Venezuela agriculture employs approximately 8.8% of the population that is economically active. About 98% of oilseeds and 70% of cereals consumed by the residents of Venezuela are imported from other countries.
The inland of Puerto Cabello and the basin of the Lake Valencia lying in the western side of Caracas are the main agricultural regions in Venezuela. As 40-60% of all income came from exporting coffee, it was considered to be the main crop of this area. But the entire scenario changed drastically after oil came to rule the economy.
Chief agricultural products of Venezuela
Sorghum, corn, rice and sugarcane are considered to be the chief main field crops. Whereas coconuts, bananas, mangoes, oranges and plantains are the main fruits grown in the country.
Venezuela produces two varieties of tobacco, namely, black and Virginia blond. Many famous companies in the US use Virginia blond tobacco in the manufacture of cigarettes.
Cordage and bags used for the sacking of coffee and grains are manufactured from sisal. Along with cotton it is grown abundantly and considered as one of the most important products of agriculture in Venezuela. Doormats, hammocks, sandals, household bags and hats are also made from slender strings of sisal.
