HIV/AIDS in Uzbekistan is a serious matter of concern for the government. According to a recent medical report, HIV/AIDS in Uzbekistan and other Central Asian countries are spreading most rapidly in the world. The government and organizations like UNICEF are working very hard to grow HIV/AIDS awareness in Uzbekistan. Their hard works are not in vain as the situation is now very much under control.
According to the last UNICEF report, approximately 1.4 million people are suffering from this sexually transmitted disease in Uzbekistan, Eastern Europe and other countries in Central Asia. A WHO report confirms that from 1987 to 2005, there were 7810 HIV cases in Uzbekistan. Nearly 40% victims of this disease in Uzbekistan are adults under 30 and most of them are males. The outbreak is concentrated in Tashkent, the capital of the country. Nearly 76% of all HIV cases in Uzbekistan are registered here. The government took a number of steps for the prevention of HIV/AIDS in Uzbekistan. In 26th October, 2005 more than a million cell phone customers in Tashkent received a wake up call regarding this epidemic form of this disease. The government is doing many campaigns and launching television programs to increase the awareness. The Uzbek government has made a law in 2000 for the prevention of this disease. The situation is now much under control in this country.
