Uruguay People


The Uruguay people consist of a number of ethnic communities. Whites account for 88% of the Uruguay population. Besides them, the other people of Uruguay are Black, Mestizo and Amerindian. But the Amerindian community practically does not exist now.

Maximum of the Uruguay people are followers of Roman Catholicism. Others include a substantial portion of Protestant and Jews. The languages spoken by the people in Uruguay are Spanish, Brazilero and Portunol. The people there are known as Uruguayan.

According to 2007 data report, the population of Uruguay is about 3,460,607. The rate of the population growth is 0.504%. The birth rate is 14.41 births per 1000 population and the death rate is 9.16 deaths per 1000 population. As per 2006 report, about 9.3% of the Uruguay people are engaged in agriculture, 33.7% in industrial sector and 57% in the service sector. About 97.6% male and 98.4% of the female in Uruguay above the age of 15 years can read and write.

It has been estimated that about 90% of Uruguay people have descended from Europe. Indigenous Uruguayans are few in number. The original inhabitants of Uruguay were known as Charrua. There are some people in this nation, who have made significant contributions to the arts and literature.
