The
history of Uganda is varied, and Uganda has habitation since the time around 500 B.C., and has been the home of many events, happenings and changes in the course of time. It has experienced the incursion of various tribes, a long period of colonial rule, and dictatorial regimes of self government which have invited war, rebellions and bloodshed.
The beginning of habitation in Uganda dates back to around 500 B.C., when various tribes started moving into Uganda. By the 14th century these settlements had become organized into many kingdoms.
European interest was aroused in the late 19th century, when travelers and explorer found Uganda, and in the 1890's Uganda became an official protectorate of Britain. After a long period of colonial rule, Uganda got its independence in 1962.
Then followed the period of self governance, and Uganda was declared a Republic. But power-hungry and cruel leaders like
Milton Obote and
Idi Amin devised regimes that brought war, rebellion and violence to the country. The latter's time was especially violent in the whole
history of Uganda, and was often referred to as the "Reign of Terror". The present regime, under President Museveni, has been successful in trying to repair the damage done by the earlier regimes.
