The
history of Timor Leste dates long back during the time period of 1520. The Portugese were the first to colonize the country in the year 1520. In the year 1613, the Dutch regime gained control over the western part of the island. Portugal and Netherlands had a big fight with each other over the possession of the island. Ultimately in the year 1860, a treaty divided the eastern part of the Timor to the Portugal.
In the year 1949, the Netherlandis gave up their possession to the Dutch East Indies and thus the country Indonesia came into being. The
history of Timor Leste remembers the Indonesia's attack on the East Timorese leading them to utter penury and many of them died from famine, disease. In the year 1998, Suharto, the president of Indonesia announced of holding a referendum on the independence of the East Timorese.
The history of Timor Leste also witnessed the international pressure from the foreign countries which forced Indonesia to permit UN forces in the East Timor.
Self rule was employed and the UNTAET governed the country for nearly 3 long years. The capital of East Timor, Dili, faced chaos in 2006, when the prime minister of the country fired half of the soldiers for revolting. The East Timor had its first ever
Presidential election in the year 2007 where no candidates won the majority votes.
