Tajikistan History

Tajikistan history reveals that Tajikistan had been the part of ancient Persia's Achaemenid Empire from the 6th up to the 4th century BC, when Alexander the Great subdued the Empire in the 4th century BC.

As the history of Tajikistan maintains, Tajikistan has been inhabited since the Stone Age. In fact, the first central Asian states, namely Sogdia and Bactria (in the 1st millennium), included parts of Tajikistan. This territory was controlled by the Persians until the 4th century BC, when in 329 BC Alexander conquered Tajikistan.

But, the Greco-Bactrian kingdom was displaced by the Tochari tribes, who had invaded Sogdia about a century later. Later, in the 1st century AD, Tajikistan was taken over by the Kushana kingdom.

It was under the Kushanas that agriculture and commerce flourished under Tajikistan. Moreover, in the 5th and 6th centuries AD, as the history about Tajikistan states, parts of Tajikistan was taken over by the nomadic tribes, the Chionites and ultimately by the Ephthalites.

Towards the end of the 6th century, the Ephthalite empire fell and was displaced by the Eastern Turkic Kaganate, which in turn was captured by the Arabs in the 8th century. The Arabs were displaced by the Samanides, who revived the culture of Tajikistan.

A number of kingdoms, namely Ghaznavids, Karakhanids, Ghorids, Karakitai and Khwarazmites followed after the Samanides. Again, in the 12th century, we find the resurgence of an empire led by Genghiz Khan, who paved the way for the Sheibanids.

In the succeeding years after Sheibanids, the history of Tajikistan bears reference to the disintegration of the nation. Furthermore, according to Tajikistan history, Russia asserted control over the region in 1863, which led to many changes in the territory.

Again, in 1918, northern Tajikistan was conquered by the Bolsheviks. Ultimately, in 1924, Tajikistan was declared as an autonomous republic within the Uzbek Soviet Social Republic; but, in 1929, Tajikistan became a full Soviet Socialist Republic.

A series of social turmoil followed after 1929. It was on 9th September, 1991 that Tajikistan was declared as an independent nation; the first presidential elections in Tajikistan were contested on 27 October, 1991.
