Saudi Arabia health sector is one of the most highly developing sectors with vast economic resources being devoted towards providing safe and better medical facilities for all citizens. Saudi Arabia health facilities have constantly been improving with the opening up of many new medical institutions with the latest state-of-the-art facilities provided by them.
One of the earliest initiatives undertaken by King Abdulaziz was to establish free health care opportunities for both the native citizens as well as for pilgrims who came to visit the religious sites in the kingdom. Consequently, the medical facilities started improving in Saudi Arabia and major developments were made through the five-year plans. In the initial years, emphasis was laid towards the development of hospitals, clinics, research facilities, laboratories and clinical pharmacies. In 1990, the number of government operated hospitals stood at 258 with the total capacity of 36,099 beds. Out of these, 64 were privately owned and 163 were managed by the Ministry of Health.
Saudi government then encouraged more and more people to take up medical studies and health care. Since 1970 onwards, the transformation of health care in Saudi Arabia has been remarkable with 350 hospitals being built by the end of 2005.
At present, the Saudi Arabian people can avail the best quality medical services and have an access to all modern health care facilities.
