History of Moldova
Moldova, though a small country, has a lot to boast about. It has a rich cultural heritage and has experienced a number of revolutions. Moldova established itself as an independent nation in 1918 when it freed itself from the rule of Czarist Russia. However, Moldova was annexed by the Soviet Union in 1940 after the Ribbentrop Summit. When the procedure of restructuring commenced Moldova again restored its sovereignty and declared itself as an independent state on 27th August, 1991. Moldova joined United Nations in 1992 soon after their independence.
Geography of Moldova
Moldova is situated in the eastern part of Europe between the North Latitudes 26o 40' and 30o 06' and East Longitude between 45o 28' and 48o 28’. Moldova is spread over an area of about 33843 square kilometers. The main rivers flowing through the place are Danube, Raut, Prut and Nistru. The topography of the region is a mixed one. The place is mountainous in the north while in the south it is flat with plains. The country experiences hot summer while the winter is moderate. Moldova is rich in natural resources like phosphorous and gypsum. The place also has a rich variety of flora and fauna.
The capital of Moldova is Chisinau. It is the main economic, political and cultural center of Moldova. The capital city covers an area of around 120 square kilometers. The city is divided into 5 sectors, namely Botanica, Ciocana, Buiucani, Centre and Riscani.
