Mali Health

Mali Health issues are mostly handled by the civic health services. The number of private doctors and adequate medical institutions was very less in the earlier times but now the scenario has slowly improved. Vast investments have been made in the health care sector by Mali government.

Mali is trying to fight diseases like malaria, enteritis, leprosy and tuberculosis. Special care is being taken to introduce good medicines for pneumonia, cholera, trypanosomiasis, schistosomiasis and onchocerciasis. Malnutrition, anemia and tetanus are the other widespread diseases in Mali. The number of AIDS patients in Mali is also on a steep rise and by the end of 2001 the number was 1.7% of the total population.

Safe drinking water needs to be supplied to various places in order to ensure a healthy life. Vitamin and calcium capsules are provided during the health camps. The government is trying to supply proper medicines to the pregnant women so that infant mortality rate can be brought down. Even special camps are organized for educating women on controlling child birth. The hospitals in Bamako are in good condition and can cater to emergency services.

The Marchoux Institute for Leprosy treatment and Institute of Tropical Ophthalmology in Bamako, which apart from providing treatment for various diseases also carries out research work. Effective organization and proper use of money is necessary for the growth of the health care sector in Mali.
