Research in Madagascar is a broad category that consists of scientific research, technological research, geological research, research in medicine etc. There are research institutes in Madagascar, which are the sites where these various kinds of research work take place. Research in Madagascar receives to a great extent French aid with respect to technical and scientific assistance.
There are a number of French research institutes in Madagascar where one can carry on with research work and at the same time study several subjects like hydrology, tropical forestry, geology, medicine etc. The most important and well known of the research institutes of Madagascar is the National Center of Applied Research in Rural Development. Located at the capital city of Madagascar, Antananarivo, this research institute deals with researches in agriculture, zoology, forestry, veterinary studies and fisheries.
Antananarivo also houses a government department of agronomic research, Pasteur Institute that conducts biological research and the National Institute of Geodesy and Cartography. Another significant research center in Madagascar is the University of Antananarivo which constitutes various departments including science department, polytechnics department, department of health sciences and department of agriculture. The university also has a Institute and Geophysical Observatory.
Other universities that has various departments for carrying out research work are the University of Fianarantsoa and the University of Mahajanga. Expenditures on research from 1987 to 1997 amounted to 0.2% of the islands GNP. Research in Madagascar is an important aspect of the scientific development of the country.
