Madagascar health is taken care of by the government of the nation. Madagascar had 10.7 physicians and 21.6 nurses to serve every 100,000 people in 1996. Ministry of Health looks after the health of Madagascar. The budget set for health purpose by government was increased in the 1990 s. It accounted for about 10% of the government budget in 2000.

The National Health Policy of Madagascar emphasized on the growing problem of HIV/AIDS. The government has taken certain effective measures to prevent this disease. Some of the important steps taken to curb this problem include the following:
  • An office of HIV/AIDS programs has been established in the Ministry of Health.
  • A National Strategic Plan has been finalized for 2002-2006.
  • Developing a national plan to supervise the advancement of HIV/AIDS.
  • Creating a program to prevent the transmission of this disease from mother to child.
Many of the hospitals have general physicians as well as specialists. There are foreign physicians as well. Vaccination is done against many diseases. Medical Insurance is not uncommon to Madagascar.
