Laos Holidays follow the Gregorian calendar for official purposes, but most of the villages of Laos still follow the
Laos calendar. The
Laos calendar is a mixture of the solar and lunar calendars. The year is calculated by the phases of the sun while the months are done by the lunar phases.
The chief
holidays in Laos are observed to celebrate the agricultural season and the festivals influenced by the Buddhist times.
Laos holidays centering around Buddha are numerous, some being Bun Pha Wet, Bisakha Puja, Megha Puja, Khao Phansaa, etc. The official New Year of Laos is on 1st January but the
Laos New Year Boun Pimai is celebrated in between April 13-15. It is the most important
holiday in Laos.
The
National Holidays of Laos are Labor Day on 1st May, Children's Day on 1st June, Lao National Day on 2nd December, Army Day on January 20th and Women's Day on March 8th.
