Easter

In the present day, the term Easter comes from the word east. The celebration of Easter takes place on the first Sunday that comes after the first full moon. The Easter Sunday occurs between March 22nd and April 25th. The celebration of Easter includes Easter Bunny, Easter Eggs and Baskets and colorful flowers.

In Iceland, Easter begins with Holy Thursday when almost all the shops are closed. On the Easter Holidays of Iceland cinema halls remain open. Many people goes out of the town for a short trip on Easter In Iceland. After Easter they return home.

The parents and grandparents gives their children a chocolate Easter Egg. It is a tradition of Iceland that during Easter Holidays the families gather together in a place and have their lunch or dinner.

Palm Sunday is the Sunday before Easter. Palm Sunday is celebrated because on this day Jesus entered Jerusalem and all the people greeted him with palm leaves. Eggs became the part of Easter celebration. Until 1920 Iceland never used Easter Eggs. After the excavation of the egg shell the Easter Eggs were decorated. At first egg shaped boxes were used, which were filled with delicacies. Later actual chocolate eggs were used. These chocolate eggs were kept on Saturday night beside the bed of the child. In the Easter of Iceland actual eggs were hardly used. Rabbit was not allowed to be eaten at that time. Instead of eating the real thing, rabbit was baked out of dough as a tradition of Easter Bunny. The second day of Easter that is Monday is also a holiday.

Some of the flowers of Easter are lily, tulips, and daffodils which are seen at the spring time. Yellow, purple, white, green, and gold are the colors associated with Easter.

Easter is a beautiful celebration and the Icelanders enjoys Easter to the fullest.
