The government of Burkina Faso from the year 1993 onwards has taken great initiatives to improve the conditions of Burkina Faso Health. The total expenditure of health amounted to 6.1% of the GDP of the country in the year 2004.

One of the serious illnesses faced by the Burkina Faso inhabitants is onchocerciasis or river blindness, which affected a large section of the population. The health services in Burkina Faso undertook various control programs and achieved good results. The infant mortality rates come to about 106 per thousand in the year 2006. The epidemics that broke in the city include yellow fever, cholera and meningitis. The children are immunized for the diseases like diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, measles.
HIV/Aids has posed as a great threat to the country. The adult prevalence of HIV and Aids came to about 6.5%. Thus heath services in Burkina Faso need a great deal of improvement. Burkina Faso Health has to strive continuously to control the various epidemics and diseases. More hospitals, modern equipment, skilled doctors and nurses are needed especially in the rural area of the country as part of the endeavor to improve heath in Burkina Faso.
