Belarus agriculture contributes 8.9% of the total GDP of the country. Belarus agriculture also constitutes 14% of the total labor force. The major agricultural produces of the Belarus agriculture include grain, vegetables, potatoes, sugar beets, beef, flax and milk. In the year of 1993, Belarus agriculture and forestry together accounted for more than one quarter of the gross domestic products and also 6% of the former Soviet Union's agricultural output.
When the country was a part of the Soviet Union, Belarus agriculture consisted of chiefly the collective farms and the state farms along with small plots, that were used for private household. After the breakup of Belarus from Soviet Union in the early years of the 1990s, the government decided to continue with the large scale farming from the agriculture at Belarus. They decided for it since they analyzed that the capital stock and the existing equipments were best suited for the purpose. The Ministry of Agriculture transformed the state farms and the collective farms of the agriculture in Belarus into various joint stock companies which would be efficient in agriculture and would be able to provide most of the social services in the rural areas.
The Law on the Right to Land Ownership was added by the government to the Land Lease Law in the March of 1993. This led to the limitation of the purchase of small parcels for orchards and housing. The private farms in the agriculture of Belarus were provided with a lease but only up to fifty hectares on the long term leases.
