Sagua la Grande is a municipality located on the north coast of the province of Villa Clara in central Cuba, on the Sagua la Grande River. The city is close to Mogotes de Jumagua, limestone cliffs.


Sagua La Grande, also known as La Villa del Undoso, is a city located on the north coast of the province of Villa Clara in central Cuba. It is on the Sagua la Grande River. Sagua la Grande was founded in 1812. By the beginning of the 20th century, the city and its port, (Isabela de Sagua), had grown to become an important commercial centers.

One of the most beautiful buildings in this city, El Casino Español (The Spanish Casino) built in 1908, was the meeting place for the Sociedad Sagüera (Social Club of Sagua).

Tourism development in Sagua La Grande has mystifying importance due to its high aesthetic and recreational values, beautiful beaches, and exuberant Caribbean flora and fauna, thus ratifying the huge potential for nature tourism in central Cuba. In addition, the Fauna Preserve of the Northern Keys is located to the north of the municipalities of Sagua la Grande and the Caribbean. The preserve, which covers an area of 80,000 hectares, is home to large colonies of flamingos, as well as endemic species such as lizards and mollusks, in addition to 250 species of plants, including 40 ornamental species.

Historically, Villa Clara, one of the country’s central provinces, has been regarded as one of the most strategically important areas of Cuba. Although the area has yet to be recognized as one of Cuba’s premier tourist destinations, the coast of Villa Clara is dotted with numerous cays and coral reefs; and there are some good sandy beaches in the north. . The largest Cuban river to drain into the Atlantic, Río Sagua la Grande, is also in Villa Clara province.
