Isla Juventud or Island of Youth located in the southeast part of the main island of Cuba is on of the first fragments of the new world that Christopher Columbus had discovered way back in 1494. It is the largest of the 600 islands that make up the Archipelago of Canarreos.
But today Isla Juventud is not only famous for its connection to Columbus but has actually gained importance because of the Spanish culture that it has adapted to in the colonial era. In fact Isla Juventud like the main land of Cuba has also a history of Mesoamerican civilization. Before the arrival of the Europeans, this island was inhabited by Taino Indians who had been living in Isla Juventud since 300p Ch.

Isla Juvenud is differently known as Parrot island, Prisoner Island, Island of Deported, Isle of Pines and lately the official name has been recognized as Isla Juventud or Island of Youth. The capital of this island Nueva Gerona is home to such tourist interests as Parque Guerillero,Parque de Diversiones, Centro de Desarollo de Artes Visuales,Nuestra Senora de los Dolores and Academy of Science. You will also find El Pinero, a ship of historical importance.
