The unit of the Syria Currency is the Syrian Pound. The Syrian Pound when translated into Arabic known as the 'Lira' and is sometimes abbreviated as SP or LS(Livre Syrien) but the Syria Currency is most often known as S£. All the prices of a Syria Currency are now in even numbers of pounds and therefore the subdivision 'piastre' has now become obsolete.
Earlier Syria was a part of the Ottoman Empire and the official Syria Currency was Turkish lira. With the decline of the Ottoman Empire Syria was included in a mandate, and all the states under the French and British mandates, including Lebanon, Jordan, and Palestine started using the Egyptian pound. Syria was included within the French mandates and French Currency was made the Syrian Currency.
Today the Syrian Pound or Lira is the Syria Currency and one Syria Pound can e divided into hundred piastres. The Syria Currency banking system is state owned and there is at least one branch of the Commercial Bank of Syria in all the important Syrian towns. The Syria Currency cannot usually be reconverted to hard Currency but the hard currency can be exchanged for local Syria Currency in the branches of the Commercial Bank of Syria.
