The 15th Asian Games was held in Doha, Qatar from december1 to December 15, in the year 2006. After hosting the Asian Games Qatar, Doha became the first city in the region and the second in West Asia to host the Asian Games. The official Mascot for the Asian Games Qatar was "Orry", which was a Qatari Oryx. Oryx was chosen as the official mascot because it passed on the message of commitment, peace and fun at the Games.
The opening ceremony of the Asian Games at Qatar was one of the most stunning events and technologically it was upgraded in the multi sports event. This ceremony took place at the Khalifa International Stadium and it was viewed by at least 50,000 spectators. Many famous personalities were present at the opening ceremony. The ceremony started with the grand welcome of the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani along with the OCA Chairman Sheikh Fahad Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.Qatar;s national anthem was sung with the hoisting of the national flag.
Both in terms of planning and sporting achievement Doha proved itself to be highly successful in the 15th Asian Games. In the bidding process Doha had accumulated 22 out of 41 votes and thus was selected as the host for the 2006 Asian Games. There were officially 46 categories as of 39 sports in debate in the sports event contested in the 2006 Asian Games. Sports like Archery, Badminton, Athletics, Football, Shooting, Squash, and many more were contested. Qatar won 9 gold, 12 silver and 11 bronze in the 2006 Asian Games.
