History of Panama Schools
Primary and secondary education in Panama had suffered for some time due to social and political instability in the country. However, the education system has noticeably regained its strength now. There were 2849 primary schools in Panama in 1996, with 371250 students. However, the student-teacher ratio in 1999 was 26: 1 which clearly suggests a dearth of teachers in the country. The secondary schools in Panama enrolled 221,022 students in 1996, taught by 12,239 teachers. The 1999 record shows 98% of the children enrolled in primary schools, and 61% in secondary schools.
Panama Education System
Education is free of charge and obligatory in Panama for children over the age of 6 and under the age of 15. Fees are charged only at the secondary level. Primary education goes on for six years. Secondary education, which has two stages, also lasts for a total of six years, with three years for each stage.
Major Panama Schools
One of the major Panama Schools is the Panama Elementary School founded in 1875. The International School of Panama is another very important institution, founded in 1982, and having a strong academic repute. Other important schools in Panama are the Balboa Academy, the Crossroads Christian Academy and the Oxford School of Panama.
The Panama Schools are the most significant elements of the education system in Panama, as people of Panama are more inclined on availing primary and secondary education rather than higher education.
