Zinder Niger

Zinder is the second biggest city in Niger after Agadez. The total number of people inhabiting the city of Zinder is 200,000. Zinder is placed at a distance of 149 miles from the city of Kano and 535 miles from the capital city of Niamey. The original inhabitants of Zinder in Niger were the Beriberi belonging to the subset of the Kanauri.

The city of Zinder at Niger is as old as that of the 18th century. At that juncture, Zinder was situated at the heart of the state of Damagaram, one of the subservients of the Bornu Empire. The total population of Zinder at that time was around 20,000 people. The city was mostly famous for its city wall to protect the inhabitants from the slavers.

In 1899, Zinder of Niger was captured by the French and was transformed into a military territory. It was also made the first capital of the country. In 1926, Niamey replaced the position of the capital city and soon Niger became one among the official French colonies in the French West Africa in the year 1922. Some of the major tourist attractions at Zinder are the Zinder Great Mosque, the old Hausa settlement and the Zinder Sultan's Palace.
