Medical facilities in Malawi have been developed with the intention of improving the health standards of the people. Malawi is plagued by a number of health problems like AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis that need to be taken care of. Also the rate of maternal mortality has been quite high in Malawi.
The Ministry of health as such has come up with a number of plans and programs that intend to provide better medical facilities. The hospitals that are run by the government in Malawi function on a three tier basis. The third tier includes the hospitals at the village level that provide free treatment to the people. These serve as the first level medical facility that the people in rural areas can avail. However, these hospitals in Malawi lack the basic infrastructure and as such are unable to provide efficient service.
Another major problem faced in Malawi is that the medical supplies are in most cases only provided to the hospitals at the first and the second level. As such, Medical facilities in Malawi in the rural areas is insufficient to serve the needs of the people and sometimes even the basics like band aid or aspirin are found to be absent in these hospitals.
When the situation in a medical case turns critical it is transferred to the nest level that is the district level. The district hospitals are engaged in performing surgeries and looking into other complicated cases.
In order to improve the medical situation in Malawi, efforts have been made by the government to improve the overall medical condition.
