Laos, the landlocked nation occupies the northwest portion of the Indochinese peninsula. The neighboring countries are China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and Burma. The country is mainly consisted of mountain in the north, dense forest in the northern and eastern area.Laos is separated from Burma and Thailand by the Mekong River.
Laos of Asia is mainly inhabited by people who migrated from China in the 8th century. Lan Xang Kingdom, the first Laotian state was founded in the 14th century. In 1713 it got divided into three separate kingdoms. Siamese came into power in 18th century, which again was taken away by the French. The union of Indochina incorporated this territory.

Laos History during World War II a strong nationalist movement developed. But France reestablished its power.
Laos was given semi autonomy in 1949 and was granted independence in 1950 spurred by the Viet Minh. Later on it became a Communist state when the communists overthrew the monarchy in 1975. Until 1990 Laos was not open to the world. In spite of the reforms the country still has to depend on International Donation.
