Juan Leon Mera was a famous musician, who gave birth to the lyrics of Ecuador's National Anthem. A famous politician as well as political essayist was Juan Benigo Vela.
A controversial novel called 'Huasipungo' written by Jorge Icaza in 1934, depicted the plight of native peoples in the Sierra and the problems generated by the oil industry. Jorge Enrique Adoum's creation, 'Entre Marx una Mujer Desnuda in 1976 is a novel about novel writing itself and about the life in Ecuador.
