Botswana Currency has Pula as the official currency which literally means “rain” in the language of Setswana.
The name of the Botswana Currency is due to the fact that rains occur scarcely in the country, resulting in the formation of deserts like the Kalahari. So, the name itself refers to the precious character of Pula. Pula was introduced as the national Botswana Currency in the year 1976, before which the South African currency of rand was in vogue.

Pula is one of the strongest currencies in the whole of the African continent. The coins under the currency of Botswana are distributed in the denominations of 50, 25, 10 and 5 thebe and 5, 2 and 1 pula. Thebe coins however have been withdrawn from the currency in Botswana.

The various banknotes available under the currency of Botswana include those of the denominations of 100, 50, 20 and 10 pula. The old pula notes of Botswana's Currency like 5, 2 and 1 pula are demonetized and can be exchanged at the central bank for the next five years.

The inflation rate in the Botswana currency is that of 8.5%, according to the research conducted by the Bank of Botswana in the year 2006.
