Virginia Cities: An Overview
The state of VA is home to 11 Metropolitan Statistical Areas. Hampton Roads, Northern Virginia, and Richmond-Petersburg are the most populated areas. Given below are the major Virginia cities:
Richmond- It is the capital of Virginia. The metropolitan region of Richmond houses a population of more than 1.2 million. The city is known for its administrative importance. Richmond is home to a range of tourist attractions such as Belle Isle, the Historic Downtown, Monument Avenue, Virginia Fine Arts Museum, Edgar Allan Poe Museum, State Capitol, Hollywood Cemetery, and Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden.
Virginia Beach - As of 2009, the city of Virginia Beach is counted as the most densely inhabited city in the state. It is a famous resort city in southeast VA and is home to the oceanfront boardwalk. People visit Virginia Beach to participate in various fun-filled activities and adventures such as golfing, surfing, fishing, and whale and dolphin watching.
Norfolk- Norfolk is the second most populated city in the state of VA. It shapes the central portion of the Hampton Roads metropolitan region. The region houses more than 1.6 million inhabitants and is home to the biggest marine base in the world, Naval Station Norfolk.
Suffolk- It is the biggest city in terms of area at 429.1 sq miles (1,111 km2). Suffolk incorporates a part of the Great Dismal Swamp.
Besides the above, other important Virginia cities are Chesapeake (third most populated city), Arlington, Alexandria, Charlottesville, Fredericksburg, Williamsburg and Roanoke.
