The elected president serves a five year term. The Vice-President of Uruguay is elected from the same political party as the president. The principles of democracy are the pillars of Uruguayan politics. A number of political parties add vitality to the governance of Uruguay. Parliament takes the form of a bicameral General Assembly. Legislators are elected by popular vote and serves a 5 year term. The Republic of Uruguay is currently headed by a left-wing government.
