Being a constitutional federation of seven emirates, the United Arab Emirates follows a federal system of government. Each emirate has its own ruler. As stated by the Constitution every emirate is endowed with many powers and functions.
The Federation was formed on 2nd December 1971. On the same day the Constitution of UAE was adopted.
The President of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, was elected on 3rd November 2004. He is the chief of the state and serves a tenure of 5 years. The Council of Ministers of UAE is headed by the Prime Minister, who is the chief of the government. The rulers of the separate emirates make up the Supreme Council, which is the primary body in the state that chalks out policies.
The FNC or the Federal National Council is the Parliament of UAE. It is a consultative body with 40 members.
The United Arab Emirates is proud of its independent judiciary, which is free from the executive and legislative branches of the government.
