The newly adopted and ratified Constitution of the republic of East Timor which acquired official status on 2002 states that the
government of East Timor consists of the
Head of State, the Head of Government, the National Assembly, the Ministers and the Government Departments. There is the provision of a nationwide legislative election that grants the people the power to elect the head of the State and the National Assembly for the
government of East Timor. It has been stated that the President is the Head of the State although his powers are predominantly symbolic, but the real power lies with the Prime Minister who is designated as the Head of State.
Within the
government of East Timor, it is the President who chooses the leader of the majority party in the unicameral parliament as the Prime Minister. It is upto the Prime Minister then to select his Ministers and Cabinet from among his party members for the
government of East Timor. Both the President and the National Assembly serve a 5 year term after which fresh elections will decide on the next Head of State and the National Assembly members. The unicameral parliament, which is the chief body within the
government of East Timor, is modeled on the Portugal's administrative structure.
