Tajikistan music has a rich classical tradition which is strongly influenced by the Sufi school of song and music performance, as well as a very rich folk tradition that hails from the mountainous villages. Together, they form a tradition of music that is unique in its taste and appeal. The instruments used in the music of Tajikistan have a lot in common with popular musical instruments of central Asia, although with clear distinctive marks.
Classical Tajikistan Music
The classical music in Tajikistan is extremely sombre in manner. Popularly known as shashmaqam, these songs are influenced by the mystique philosophy of the Sufi school of religious practice. The influence of Sufi in Persia and the Iranian lands is well known. Classical music from Tajikistan celebrate the communion with God from a very personal level and the resultant euphoria.
Folk Music of Tajikistan
Folk music forms an integral part of Tajikistan music. It can be sub-divided into three distinct forms – songs from the Central Kuhistoni, Pamir and the northern province of Sogdiana. Some of the northern songs have common elements with Uzbek folk songs.
Songs perpetuate every sphere of Tajikistan's life. There are work songs of various kinds, songs to grace various significant social events like marriage and funeral. The Gugugli, or heroic lays with epic themes also form an important part of Tajikistan's musical heritage.
Musical Instruments of Tajikistan
Tajikistan music feature many musical instruments of indigenous origin. Flutes and frame drums are the main forms of musical instruments. These are joined by various other musical instruments like tanbours and lutes of different kinds. The lutes also play an important role in the Ismaili folk music of Badakhshan, which is a unique stream of Tajakistan music.
