Taiwan Government comprises of five branches (Yuan). With the executive Yuan, the greatest political power rests, while the legislative branch is responsible for the legislative matters of Taiwan. The 225 members from this branch are elected directly from multi member districts whereas the rest are elected on a proportional basis. On the other hand, the Judicial Yuan is been appointed by the president and acts as the highest judicial authority.
Beside this the Control Yuan takes care of censorship and other political issues including censure and legal documentation while the examination Yuan is in charge of examinations for government positions.
For the last couple of years Kuomintang (KMT) has been the leading political party of Taiwan. The Democratic Progressive party, established in 1986 is considered to be the other main party that plays a major role in Taiwan Government.
Theoretically the national government is separate from the government of Taiwan province, this government includes all of Taiwan except the city of Taipei, Kaohsing and a few island off the mainland coast. This province is ruled by a governor.
