Catalonia is an autonomous community in northeastern Spain. It is officially recognized as a "nationality" of Spain. Catalonia covers a total area of 12,399.3 square miles and has an estimated population of 7,535,251.

As shown in the Catalonia Political Map, Catalonia is bordered by France and Andorra to the north, Aragon to the west, the Valencian Community to the south, and the Mediterranean Sea to the east.

The community of Catalonia is divided into four provinces:
  • Barcelona
  • Girona
  • Lleida
  • Tarragona

Barcelona is the national capital and is clearly represented in the map. With an estimated population of 1,621,537 within its administrative limits, Barcelona is the largest city in Catalonia and the second-largest city in Spain.

The other major cities of Catalonia are: Salsona, Cardona, Mataro, Figueres, Tivenys, Santa Barbara, Fonollosa, Tremp, Sopeira, Castello d Empuries, Llavorsi, and Altamas.

Catalonia is a beautiful place covered by beautiful mountainous terrain of the Pyrenees dotted with Romanesque churches. Cultural festivals, events, cuisine, art and architecture of the region leaves the traveler with great excitement.

Barcelona Montserrat is a famous pilgrimage center for the Catholics; it is a monastery situated on top of a rock mountain. The monastery is famous for its unusual location and is thronged by pilgrims from all over the world.

The government of autonomous community of Catalonia is a devolved type that functions in the framework of a constitutional monarchy. Artur Mas is the President of the community.
