The country has steadfastly maintained its independence since its inception. This was achieved partly by its neutral stance and also by successive pragmatic rulers who skillfully led the small country away from the social and civil unrest of mainland Europe. San Marino also has in its record the first democratically elected Communist government in 1945.
The land of San Marino is predominantly mountainous. The topography of the country consists of the Apennines mountain range. There is a marked absence of flat land in San Marino. The highest point in the country is Monte Titano. The peak of the mountain towers 2,457 feet above sea level. San Marino is characterized by a Mediterranean climate. This microstate is politically demarcated into 9 municipalities.
