Maldives land and people constitute a small island nation in the Indian Ocean. It lies close to the Indian subcontinent. The population of the island comprises mostly of local groups and communities.
Maldives land, with its capital Male Island, covers an area of approximately 800 kilometers in the Indian Ocean. It is located in the south western part of Sri Lanka. The island comprises of near about 25 atolls, which had been formed by some 1200 coral islands. The location of these islands beside the sea accounts for the tropical climate of the place. Tropical vegetation is found to grow on the low lying islands and the island at most places is lined up with coconut palms. Among the numerous islands, about 200 are fit for habitation. The entire island is divided into 19 divisions and a capital for the sake of effective administration.
The people of Maldives form a mixed population as one finds people from different cultural groups like the Dravidians, Sinhalese, Arabs and Africans. A large part of the population comprises of Sunni Muslims. Divehi, a Sinhalese dialect is the popular language while English is widely understood.
