Maldives Government and Politics

Maldives government and politics function according to the Constitution drafted in 1968. The Constitution of Maldives underwent revisions in 1970, 1971 and 1975.The Constitution of the republican state of Maldives lays down provisions for a centralized form of government with the President as the head. The President is vested with all the powers and thus is the sovereign authority in the Maldives government. The Constitution heavily borrows from Islam as far as its philosophical framework is concerned. The Constitution invests the President with autonomous powers in the spread of Islam. The President is responsible for the appointment of the judges of various courts who adjudicate various criminal and civil cases and interpret the law of the land in the process.

Maldives politics follows an electoral process. The President is elected for a term of five years and can well be re- elected for a second term. Election is subject to formalization through a public consensus or a popular referendum. There is no Prime Minister in Maldives as the post was dissolved long back in 1975. The President is assisted in his assignments by a Council of Ministers. Maldives has a unicameral legislature, which is elected for five years by adult franchise or is appointed by the President himself.
