Madagascar Land and People

Madagascar land and people occupy an island in the Indian Ocean and comprises of a highland plateau bordered by a coastal strip. The northern side of the plateau rises to lofty heights. Mt. Maromokotro is located in this region at an altitude of 9,450 ft and is the highest peak in Madagascar. The plateau was once covered with dense forests and grasslands. But nothing of that remains as the area was subjected to deforestation. The island owing to its location remained secluded for ages. As a result it was a safe haven for the various species of flora and fauna like rare orchids and lemurs which inhabited the island. To ensure their safety from lurking predators a national park was established on the island in 1997. The island is watered by rivers like Mangoro, Mangoky, Betsiboka, Onilahy and others. Antananarivo is the capital of Madagascar.

The population of Madagascar comprises of two distinct groups. One section comprises of African descent while the other one is of a Malayo-Indonesian descent. There is also a section of Asian Indians and French people. French and Malagasy are the official languages of the state. Almost half of the population follows the local religion while the rest are mostly Christian .Muslims form a minor section of the total population.
