Macedonia Stock Exchange was set up in the year 1995 but the trading operations commenced from the year 1996 with an opening capital of 500,000 Euros. It is the first organized stock exchange of the Republic of Macedonia. In its early days, the stock exchange acted as the main marketplace for trading in securities which includes both shares and bonds.
At the time of its commencement, the stock exchange at Macedonia was considered as a non profit seeking joint stock company. At that time its founding members as per the eligibility laid down by the law were 3 insurance companies, 3 saving houses and 13 banks. But in the year 1997, banks were barred from its membership which was once again resumed in the year 2000.
At present, the stock exchange in Macedonia consists of 17 members including 6 banks and 11 brokerages. The members must obtain license from Macedonian Security Exchange Commission before starting off its operations. Moreover, brokers need to obtain an approval from the members before trading in securities at Macedonia Stock Exchange.
Since 2001, the stock exchange of Macedonia has started its operations on a profit seeking basis. It consists of 20 shareholders including 18 legal enterprises constituted by 9 banks and 9 brokerage houses and 2 physical persons. Shares of over 40 national companies are listed on the Macedonia Stock Exchange for trading purpose.
