Kyrgyzstan Government and Politics



Kyrgyzstan Government and Politics is republic in nature and consists of a parliament that has two legislative bodies. The country of Kyrgyzstan is distributed into seven administrative divisions. Kyrgyzstan Republic announced their independence from the Soviet Union on August 31 in1991 and the constitution was formed on May 5 1993.

Structure of Kyrgyzstan Government

The government of Kyrgyzstan is comprised of three branches according to the constitution. Inspite of the presence of these three branches, presidency has always been the strongest body of Kyrgyzstan government.
  • President and Members of Parliament

    The president of Kyrgyzstan is to be elected every five years for maximum of two terms. The election is done by the citizens of the country. The Council of Ministers or the Members of the Parliament help the president to execute and run the government.

  • Branches of Kyrgyzstan Government

    The 3 main branches of the government of Kyrgyzstan are:

    • Executive Branch – The Prime Minister along with the Cabinet form the executive branch of the Kyrgyzstan government. The ministers of the cabinet are appointed by the president himself.

    • The Judiciary Branch – The judiciary branch consists of Supreme Court, Higher Court of Arbitration and Constitutional Court. In the constitution it is clearly mentioned that the judges at the Supreme Court must be chosen by the president himself and approved by the parliament. Kyrgyzstan citizens between 35 to 65years of age are only eligible for the post.

    • The Legislative Branch – The Assembly of People’s Representatives and the Legislative Assembly are the two legislative bodies of the bicameral Supreme Council.
Apart from the constitutional branches of Kyrgyzstan Government and Politics, there are several political parties and bodies that affect the political situation of the country.
