Greece, land and people both are a result of combination of different ethnic groups and influences of the surrounding countries and states. 'Greece' as it called Hellas or Ellas in Greek is a republic in South Eastern Europe.
According to the 2005 estimation, the population of Greece was 10,668,000 and the Land area of Greece was 50,944 sq mi or 131,945 sq km. The southernmost portion of the Balkan Peninsula and the boundaries of the Ionian Sea in the west surrounds Greece on either sides. Mediterranean Sea in the south and Aegean Sea in the east are the two large water bodies surrounding the Nation. The countries of Turkey and Bulgaria stand in the northeast, Albania sharing the northwest border and Macedonia in the north. Athens is its capital city of the Greece and also the largest one.
The Geography of Greece is almost 75% of the land being mountainous region and only 25% of the land is cultivable. The country encompasses four major geographical regions, they are :
- Northern Greece that extends to the Central Greece are also included in this region. Low-lying, fertile plains along the rivers of Nestos and Struma. The Khalkidhikí peninsula and Greece's second largest city of Thessaloníki
- Central Greece in the Gulf of Corinth, includes mainly plains of Thessaly, Boeotia and Attica. Mt. Olympus with an altitude of 9,570 ft or 2,917 m is the highest point in Greece lies in this region. The capital city Athens lies here.
- Southern Greece comprises of Peloponnesus.
- The fourth region of Greece consists of many islands with the land area of 9,600 sq mi or 24,900 sq km. Some of them are Crete, Kérkira, Zákinthos, Kefallinía, Lefkás, Ithaki and many more islands. Greece do not have too many rivers, among which none of them navigable.
The Greek people are hardly from the ancient Greeks race, They have experienced strong experience throughout ages by numerous invaders including the Balkans.
